I wrote a book and talked about Tourette Syndrome and Tics for the first time. What it’s like to have them. What it’s like to hide them. I was on ET Canada for 17 years and I hid them every single day. Between takes I’d try to get as many out as I could. I’d force myself to yawn so I could pull my neck a certain way - or open my eyes super wide like I was always surprised - but mostly I’d close them so I could roll my eyes into the back of my head over and over. Nobody knew. They thought I was sleepy. Which I always was, so it worked out. My tics have got better as I get older - But every day was a struggle.

My tics have always been sudden, repetitive, and unwanted “flinches.” Mostly in my face, my neck, and my eyes. Especially in my eyes. When I was a kid, my brother called my Twitchy - but that’s because neither of us knew it was even a thing.

The best way I’ve heard what it’s like to fight off tics is this: Hold your eyes open for as long as you can without blinking. While this is going on, that burn will be all you can think about. As your eyes start to dry out, you’ll start to get that feeling of incoming relief knowing all you have to do to make it stop is blink once—and when you finally do, the feeling is almost euphoric. Then do that same thing again. And again. That’s what tics feel like. I’ve hidden, disguised, and managed my tics every day of my life until now.
