A few things to bear in mind….

Sole trader? You don't need to have a business bank account, it can just be a separate current account. But if you’re a limited company it is a legal requirement to have a business account. Pay yourself a set “wage” from this account each month on a set date.

2. You need to register with HMRC by 5 October the year that you start working for yourself. Keep records and file a Self Assessment tax return for each tax year by the following January 31.

3. There are lots of cloud-based accounting software companies out there so make some comparisons on features and prices to see which ones work for you. Some do a lot more than you might need.

4. If you choose the accountant route (which in our opinion is obviously the best choice!) they should be able to recommend accounting software to you and will train you in how to use it.

5. Your plan doesn’t have to be super detailed but you might want to write down your goals, what you need to earn, a cashflow budget, and how you’ll divide your time.

You’ll also want to consider marketing and networking - how you’ll do it, and who your target customer is.
