Many people have asked us why we call our scissors….. well….. scissors. So here’s a little history lesson. The worldwide home of haircutting is the United Kingdom 🇬🇧! A very special man built his career there and disrupted the decades old wash & set business in all of England. His name was Vidal Sassoon and he was truly the father of haircutting. What many people don’t know about Vidal is that when he came up with his “wash & wear” haircut concept, he was practically laughed out of London. He had a giant walk out and he had to start all over and build his name from scratch after people thought his idea of haircutting would put him out of business. Vidal was the very first disruptor in our industry and was a great purveyor of art and architecture and during his studies, he utilized the Bauhaus architecture method to create his own haircut curriculum- a training theory that would make him world renowned. It would become his success, his legacy and would make him the most important person ever to have lived in this industry.

Vidal also revered Japanese craftsmanship and the Japanese’s unmatched ability to create the very best haircutting scissors in the world. He would never have cut with a scissor that came from a factory line. He expected too much of himself and his scissors. He always said good things take time. And great things take even more time.

So while many may call scissors “shears” in the US, we love the nostalgia and the history and the pride of a man who believed in excellence. Every pair of our arcscissors are Made in Japan and EACH PAIR take between 3 to 6 months to be created by hand. When you strive for excellence, you should strive to cut hair with a pair of scissors where the craftsman who made your scissors cares as much about making your scissors as YOU do about cutting hair. That’s what Vidal believed in. And that’s what we believe in at ARC Scissors. If you have a pair of our ARC scissors, we know you understand this very well.
