On Friday, Nov. 3, the Alabama Military Hall of Honor (AMHOH) conducted its annual induction ceremony on the Marion Military Institute (MMI) campus. This year, the AMHOH inducted the late Gabriel Bernard Kinney, an Army Ranger who served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during WWII and was a member of the famous special operations unit nicknamed “Merrill’s Marauders.” He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service with the Marauders, who fought in grueling conditions in the jungles of Burma in 1944. 
A native of Hanceville, Kinney died on Dec. 11, 2022 at the age of 101, just months after being inducted into the Army Ranger Hall of Fame and accepting a Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of the Marauders. 
Family members attending the AMHOH induction ceremony to accept the honor were Gabe’s wife, Elena Kinney, sons Richard & Phillip Kinney, daughters Patricia Nelson & Carroll Crawford and son-in-law Fred Crawford. 
Army Ranger Pat Kelley (MMI class of 1973), Corporal Kinney’s sponsor for the award, remarked on the man he knew as a legend: “We all remember the story of Gabe and his Merrell’s Marauders, who fought against brutal Japanese combatants over almost 1,000 miles through jungles, mountains, and the hardest conditions imaginable. …. From listening to the stories of modern-day Rangers attending our base meetings to sharing experiences of his own, Gabe immersed himself into our Ranger Base. … Gabe continues to be part of Ranger history and Ranger life, and all of us with Ranger Base Kinney would like to say thank you to the Alabama Military Hall of Honor for making a place for Gabe among your ranks and thank you to Gabe for making the world a better place for all. Rangers lead the way.” 
Additional special guests attending the 2023 induction included Beverly Gebhardt, General Counsel, Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs; AMHOH Board Members; MMI Trustees; and Army Rangers representing the Gabriel Kinney Ranger Base in Pensacola, Fla. A pass in review by the MMI Corps of Cadets and luncheon followed.
