Navy Seals don’t just knock on your door.

Was I expecting to get laid off from a corporate job with 2 masters degrees? Absolutely not, but here is exactly how I shot a full length documentary 4 months after that day. 

1. Everything comes from relationships.

The only way you can be “one relationship away” is by doing outreach day after day. One of my best clients, who came from a FREE shoot, put me in the position to be in the network that ultimately let me to the biggest opportunity I’ve had to date. 

2. First impressions matter. 

Firm hand shake, eye contact and do the job to the best of your ability. No one cares about the gear or your background. I became a wallflower and hiked over 20 miles in a 48 hour span to establish my first impression. It worked. 

3. Hard work beats talent. 

Did I know that putting my head down and putting the work in would lead me to this situation? No. I knew I could figure out any obstacle ahead because I was confident and competitive. Once an athlete always an athlete. 

4. Know who’s in your corner. 

When Chadd gave me 24 hours to respond to the proposal, I had to look into who had my back, ready to help and jump at an opportunity. I had no idea how to price this, how much help I would need or how long it would even take me. Through my network I got a better understanding for all three. It was time to go to battle. 

103 hours of tracking Chadd and a 5 week turn around, One Mile Out is well on the way to impacting over hundreds of thousands of people. Wasn’t ever a matter of “if” it was a matter of “how”. 

Thankful to be able to call those I worked with on this film my friends. Truly a life changing experience.
