The Gas Station Patio mural > Multilayered plywood and paint > gasstationartscentre > Here it is! This was a real fun one for me. I’ve always wanted to create an all type piece and as a designer typography is one of the things we take pride in so I geeked out a little with this piece. The concept for this piece was to create a piece that embodied the space and the spirit of the Gas Station Art Centre. Taking inspiration from the other art work already in the space, I wanted to create something that added to the eclectic mix. I also wanted to inject some theatre energy and give it stage presence, so I took inspiration from stage sets or other props you might see during a performance. The individual type/font selections were based on lettering from vintage signage, but more specifically retro gas station signage. After digging into what the space was back in the day and why it’s called the “Gas Station”, I felt it would be good incorporate that into the concept. As with all my pieces, this design is intended to help the space shine and create a positive impact. Oh and also to take some good selfies with. Lol!

Although this piece might be different from what I’ve created in the past, it is the result of the process of a designer. For myself, style comes secondary to concept. So each project will be different based on purpose and information provided. I approach it almost like a math equation or a recipe. Take a little of this and that and hope that it’s the right solution and it’s appetizing or at the very least digestible. Lol.
