The vast majority of life in southern Africa’s Okavango Basin is sustained by water that comes from a remote region in Angola. Starting in hidden “source lakes” watched over by the Luchaze people, this water is filtered through ancient peatland into the two main rivers carrying water from Angola to Namibia, where they converge into one and flow on toward the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Near Namibia’s border with Angola, the Cubango and Cuito rivers combine into the Kavango River, which becomes known as the Okavango River once it crosses into Botswana. These source waters and rivers do not have the formal protection that the Delta in Botswana has, so scientists are gathering data to learn how to preserve the entire system. | Through a five-year partnership, debeersofficial has joined National Geographic to help protect the source waters of the Okavango Delta, which are a lifeline for endangered species and more than a million people. #OkavangoEternal
