⚠️ LAKEWOOD, Washington. — Court filings released Friday provide new details about the death of a teenager in Lakewood who police said ran into a swamp and died while fleeing from a stolen Kia last week. The Pierce County Medical Examiner identified the teen as 16-year-old Nicholas Woody II. The teen’s official cause and manner of death are still pending as of Friday. Prosecutors filed charges against two teenagers – ages 14 and 17 – who were allegedly with Woody in the stolen Kia.

According to court filings, Lakewood police attempted to stop the stolen Kia on Lakewood Drive Southwest around 10 p.m. on Dec. 2.

The officers followed the Kia to a dead-end road near Lochburn Middle School when four males jumped out of the car and ran into marshlands, a probable cause affidavit states.

“The water was cold and filled with large amounts of grass. Officers entered into the water for a short distance but due to uneven terrain, different water levels, and the cold-water temperature were forced to retreat from the water. Officers shouted for the suspects to come out and yelled several times the water was cold and dangerous. Announcements were made over the loudspeaker for anyone in the marsh to come out so they could get warm,” Pierce County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Mackenzie Selleg wrote in charging documents. Two teenagers came out of the water and were taken into custody behind the middle school.

“[Juvenile 1] was completely soaked through and muddy when he was contacted. [Juvenile 2] was also completely wet from the neck down and began showing signs of hypothermia,” Selleg wrote.

Both juveniles were taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Woody was found unresponsive in the swampy marsh area and taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to court filings, police found a pair of blue jeans with a Glock handgun near Woody’s body.

The fourth teen who ran away from the car was not located, according to the report.

Officers looked into the stolen Kia and saw it had been started with a USB cord. Officers also found two handguns inside the stolen Kia. #DubseaTV🏙📺
