The smell of warm dumplings, ginger tea and fried chestnuts filled one of the rooms of Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden as people bundled in scarfs and hats came in for free samples Saturday.

The culturally festive foods marked the beginning of Lan Su’s Donghzhi, or Chinese winter solstice, celebration. It’s the first year the garden is hosting the event, which will continue Sunday and return over the next two weekends.
