There you have it. 287 days boiled down to one evening. In a year dominated by the glitz of international arrivals, expansion news, groundbreaking TV deals, and a head-scratching new playoff format, the 2023 champions are a club that embody the best side of our soccer history and tradition. The original Black & Gold as they reminded everybody. A club that was there when it all began, and one that’s still around to win championships today thanks to its brave fans and its new ownership group keeping up with the times. The final was just perfect. Another example of the soccer Gods using dramatic irony to show us the way. At this point, they love doing that more than Nagbe likes collecting MLS Cup trophies. On the surface, it was old guard vs new. MLS originals vs flashy defending champs from LA. Saturday showed us how beautiful it can be when those two seemingly opposing poles meet in the middle. That’s Columbus. A dazzling display on the pitch last night matched by a 30-year-old fanbase doing its thing in the stands. Wilfried Nancy was given free rein, and he built a team that lived up to the club’s history while ushering in a style of play worthy of this day and age. “Impossible is an opinion” was the motto. Robust legacy and dashing modernity existing in harmony. Some might say the Crew saved the idea of the utopian North American soccer club. Heaven is real in Columbus, no doubt.
