According to the 2023 Polaris National Survivor Study, the simplest measure of a human trafficking survivor’s positive livelihood is income. However, the survey revealed that respondents overwhelmingly earned unlivable wages, often despite juggling multiple jobs, with nearly 30 percent working regular and temporary positions and 43 percent earning less than $25,000 annually.

This falls well short of a livable income, especially for families. In many southern U.S. states, a minimum livable wage for a single person ranges from $32,000 to $35,000, while for an adult with two children, it exceeds $80,000. In California, a livable wage stands at $45,000 for a single adult and soars to $114,000 for an adult with two children. These figures underscore that having a regular job doesn't guarantee survivors can make ends meet.
