I recently spent a week hunting along the Missouri River in the beautiful southeast corner of South Dakota and the experience was eerily similar to the decade that I spent chasing bucks (like “Steve”) on a certain ranch nestled in The Badlands of North Dakota (some of you will know what I’m talking about).

That ranch sat on a few thousand acres that sliced alongside the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, making it feel as big and wild as Ben Cartwright’s Ponderosa Ranch. This piece of land is full of rattlesnakes, coyotes, lions, bison, muleys, whitetails, and bighorn sheep… paradise for any man that rises and falls with the sun and moon.

I would travel there in my Tacoma (that had over half a million miles on it) and then borrow the rancher’s Polaris Ranger to transport my gear to the top of the coulees. From there, I’d hoof it a good bit to “my” plateau where I’d place my tipi and stove. I could see the entire night sky from this basecamp, including the stars that I didn’t know existed, and a milky way so bright and vivid it looked like a poster you’d purchase at the Science Museum.

Flash forward to a few weeks ago and there I was in South Dakota sitting on the top of a similar plateau, peering up at those same stars. The only difference this go-around was now I had a rooftop tent on a wickedly badass Polaris ride of my own (a fantastic tool that allows me not only vital access to nearly anywhere I want to go and a way to haul my gear… but also a truly capable mobile basecamp). Oh, … and a rad film crew that flew in from California to document my hunt for a couple days. 

I live for the euphoria that comes from exploring and sourcing my own food and I truly love experiences like this where I can bring non-hunters into my world for a bit with a goal of teaching them why it is we, as outdoorsmen and women, choose to live this way. I believe there’s no better way to help someone understand something than to actually show them… so, any chance I get to introduce new people to hunting I jump at the opportunity.
