Meet Evelyn! Evelyn is 18-years old and just started Grade 11 thanks to her third year of sponsorship through The Sonder Project’s 'Education Is Power' program. 

A shy and observant teenager, Evelyn is quietly articulate with a warm smile. Evelyn’s favorite subject is Chemistry and she has ambitions to work in medicine, but due to financial hardships and personal challenges in her life, she was not able to attend school consistently, diminishing her hopes and dreams of one day becoming a doctor.
 
As a teenage single mother, Evelyn already had a lot on her plate, but she also faced immense challenges accessing clean water for herself and her family, walking and waiting for hours each day to collect unclean water from a distant water hole with her mother every morning and evening, further deteriorating her focus on school and her infant daughter, Brandina.
 
Evelyn’s parents are both farmers, growing maize and ground nuts to earn a living, but it was never enough to cover her school fees at the beginning of the term. As a result, Evelyn was often sent home from school a couple of weeks into each term until she could pay her fees. Out of desperation, Evelyn’s parents resorted to selling their cherished livestock to fill the gap, but during Grade 10, they ran out of livestock to sell. Evelyn believed her education journey was over…
 
… but thanks to a new deep-water well that was constructed in her community and the 'Education is Power' program, which covers her school fees and essential materials like school uniforms, notebooks, and solar lamps, Evelyn’s academic journey is back on track. Evelyn’s performance has improved dramatically and she is now able to plan her path to graduation and beyond. 

Most importantly, she’s able to finally hope for a brighter future for herself and her beautiful 2-year old Brandina.
