As hyvee moves into Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee, it will face off against two of the largest supermarket chains in the country: Publix and Kroger.

publix is far larger than the 300-store Hy-Vee chain, with 1,396 locations in seven states. Those include Tennessee, where Hy-Vee hopes to open as many as five stores over the next few years.

krogerco is on another scale altogether. In addition to 1,279 Kroger stores, it owns about 1,000 more supermarkets under various brands and is seeking to merge with the 2,200-store Albertson's chain. Kroger's empire already stretches across 35 states, and in all of the markets Hy-Vee is eyeing, its superstores are a common sight.

While Hy-Vee appears ready to build similarly vast stores and will likely pour hundreds of millions of dollars into its expansion, its success in the notoriously low-margin food business is far from guaranteed, said Brittain Ladd, retail and supply chain consultant whose clients have included Kroger.
