DYK that a Chemistry grad student at #ILLINOIS accidentally whipped up the idea for portable whipped cream in the 1930s?⁣

Charles A. Getz conducted research on the use of carbonation to preserve foods. An accidental discovery was that milk infused with pressurized carbon dioxide began to foam. After switching out milk for cream and replacing the carbon dioxide with nitrous oxide, this accident turned into the development of “portable” whipped cream. His patented method was used by professor G. Frederick Smith to create Instantwhip Foods. ⁣
