Catchers are the backbone of every defense. “Catching” up with Becca on some insider knowledge.

My approach involves asking a lot of questions. I think it’s super important to know what each pitcher feels comfortable throwing in every situation. Asking each pitcher their preferences lets them know you’re listening and you’re in their corner. It allows you to grow a connection full of trust so that when the time comes that you need them to throw that pitch they are reluctant about they know that you believe in them and that’s all they need to believe in it themselves.

It’s important for me to know the opposing team’s hitters, baserunners, and offensive strategy prior to the game so I have some strategy ahead of time. From there, it’s all about what the game gives me. I rely on what’s working for the pitchers that day, the inning, the situation, the count, and the defensive shift, in order to tell me possible outcomes.

Ever since I was little I knew I wanted to be involved in the game as much as possible. Pitching was a no-go for me, so I tried catching. I think catching was what really made me love the game. I love that I am a part of every pitch and have gained an appreciation for the strategy behind the game. As a catcher, I am able to use the knowledge I have to call pitches and make strategic decisions. Being given the opportunity to during the CAA conference tournament last season is something I’ll never forget.
