January is #HumanTraffickingAwarenessMonth. “Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to lure their victims and force them into labor or commercial sexual exploitation,” according to the Department of Homeland Security. 

There are several myths out there as to what human trafficking may entail according to the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline.

*Myth: “All human trafficking involves sex.”
*FACT: It is believed there are more situations of labor trafficking, but more awareness in sex trafficking. 

*Myth: “Human trafficking only happens in illegal or underground industries.”
*FACT: Human trafficking has been reported in various businesses, including restaurants, cleaning services, factories and more. 

*Myth: “Only women and girls can be victims of sex trafficking.”
*FACT: All genders are susceptible of being victims of human trafficking. 

From a relationship, to a new job opportunity requiring relocation, to family disputes resulting in a family member running away, human trafficking can arise from any situation.
