The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step to getting federal financial aid for college. About $112 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds were awarded in 2022—so it’s a worthwhile application to fill out for any student. But it’s also long been known for being confusing and complicated.

The US Dept. of Education has recently updated the FAFSA for a simpler experience (say goodbye to about 26 questions), and say the form should only take about 10 minutes this year. Here’s what you need to know.
