Ever since I was young I knew I had some speed. I knew that focusing on specific hitting techniques like bunting & soft slapping would allow me to use my speed to my advantage. When I step in the box, I look at the defense & decide how can I get on base with different techniques.

When it comes to stealing bases, timing is everything. Whether you are are fast or not, leaving the base on time with the pitchers motion is crucial. As a player who steals a lot, before I have the chance to get on base I always pay attention to the pitcher’s motion & catchers movements. In between innings, I will count the seconds from the pitchers release to the catcher throw reaching second base. Once I have this number, I tell myself I can beat it. This mindset keeps me focused & confident. Lastly, I find the most important component is working to be as explosive as possible in the first three steps. Make those strides meaningful.

Quick decision making skills are important when running bases or playing defense because you have a split second to decide & react. To enhance this skill, the first step is knowing yourself, your speed, & what you are capable of. Then after you have self reflected on these aspects, trusting yourself will help you make smart, purposeful quick decisions. Daily practices are where you push yourself, see if you can make it two bases on a base hit or dive for a ball you aren’t sure if you can catch. You will definitely surprise yourself on what you are capable of when you go full speed with the decision you’ve made.
