Thank you Peregrine!⁣
 ⁣
The first robotic commercial flight for NASA has come to an end. After 10 days in space, Astrobotic’s Peregrine Mission One made a controlled re-entry over the Pacific on Jan. 18 and burned up in the atmosphere. Following a successful launch and separation from the rocket on Jan. 8, the spacecraft experienced a propulsion issue preventing Peregrine from softly landing on the Moon.⁣
 ⁣
Four out of five NASA payloads on Peregrine successfully powered on and collected data while in flight: Linear Energy Transfer Spectrometer (LETS), Near-Infrared Volatile Spectrometer System (NIRVSS), Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS), and Peregrine Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer (PITMS). NASA science teams are currently working to interpret the results. ⁣

Astrobotic was the first commercial vendor to launch a mission to the Moon as part of NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative. There are seven additional CLPS deliveries awarded to multiple companies, with more flights expected beginning this year. The data from the Peregrine One mission will be valuable for future commercial lunar missions.⁣

The side of the lander is visible with the NASA “meatball” logo and American flag. There is a bright spotted glare on the lower right side of the image. ⁣
