Gov. Kim Reynolds said Friday on Iowa PBS that additional gun laws would not have prevented this month's deadly shooting at Perry High School.

Two people — 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff and Principal Dan Marburger — were killed, while two additional school staff members and four students were wounded. Police said the shooter died by suicide.

Reynolds attended a vigil in Perry the night after the shooting and was present at Jolliff's funeral. She praised Marburger as "a hero" in her Condition of the State address. She signed a disaster proclamation in the wake of the shooting, allowing the Perry community easier access to state resources.

As governor, Reynolds has signed laws loosening gun regulations in Iowa, including a 2021 measure allowing adults 21 years old and older to purchase and carry handguns without a permit. The 2021 law also makes it a class D felony to sell, rent or loan a handgun to someone who is not lawfully able to possess one.
