The Old Red Mill has seen countless snow days, but each one is unique ☃️

Standing proudly in the village of Jericho for over 170 years, the Old Red Mill is a gorgeous place to visit during winter. This is one of those “blink and you’ll miss it” spots that many people drive by without really noticing. Yesterday I stopped to enjoy the fresh snow and explore Vermont’s living history. You can’t go wrong spending an afternoon here!

Why is the Old Red Mill such an important site?

🌾 Founded as a cabinet shop and starch mill, this building was converted to a grist mill in 1856. The facility served as a custom mill for local farmers, where thousands of bushels of wheat, corn, and flour were processed. This was a crucial business for the farming village.

⭐️ The mill was designated as a National Historic Site in 1972 and has since been owned by the Jericho Historical Society, who founded a free milling museum and constructed a trail network behind the mill. Just follow the river into the woods!

📜 The Old Red Mill’s actual name is Chittenden Mills in honor of Vermont’s first Governor (Thomas Chittenden) who was also the mill owner’s great-grandfather.

❄️ This museum also features the research of Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, the Jericho farmer who discovered that no two snowflakes are alike. He took the first pictures of snowflakes under a microscope back in 1885, which are now on display in the museum. I’ll be sharing a video about this soon, so stay tuned!

Parking is available behind the mill and dogs on leashes are allowed on the trails. If the lot is full when you arrive, please come back later instead of parking on the road. I’ve tagged other businesses nearby who would love to keep you entertained!

Which is your favorite season to visit the Old Red Mill?
