My true “AH-HA” moment was when one day I had a client booked for her regular full color (2-hour service at the time). She came in and said she wanted to do something completely different, in fact a huge transformation.

Conveniently, my client after her had to reschedule so I was open. At the time, my book was packed with back-to-back appointments, no breaks and the longest service in a day would take 2 hours. My schedule was 9am-8pm and I was a machine, just churning clients in and out and always feeling rushed. You know that tight feeling in your upper chest that many stylists feel when rushing? You are still blow-drying and your next client walks in, and then, just like clockwork, the anxiety appears.

That was every single day. So, suddenly on this magical serendipitous day, I had the time I needed. I took 4 hours to complete the transformation and for the first time ever in my career…. I truly loved the way I did hair. It was freeing to be able to, not only take my time, but to give my client an exclusive experience where they could feel relaxed, not rushed and most importantly happy with the result.

From that moment forward, I craved only one thing behind the chair and that my hairstylist friends, was TIME.

I finally understood that I was not bad at doing hair, but rather, I just didn’t have the time I needed to complete the service at my own personal pace. If we all ran the same speed, swam the same speed, threw the same speed, there would be no Olympics.

PACE IS PERSONAL and we must honor that. 😍
