In September 2023, the Student Press Freedom Initiative, of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, penned a letter to President Mun Choi urging MU to update university policy after staff members at The Maneater alerted the organization that there was not an exemption for student journalists as mandated reporters.

This week, MU clarified its policy that required all UM System employees to act as mandated reporters.

Before the update, if a potential source mentioned being victim of a campus sexual assault, student journalists employed by MU would be required to report the incident, regardless of the victim’s wishes. Non-compliance with the policy could previously result in disciplinary action for the student journalist.

“As the home to one of the prestigious journalism schools in the country, we’re excited that the University of Missouri has fully committed to protecting its student journalists,” wrote Lindsie Rank, representing SPFI.
