Faculty, staff and administrators gathered yesterday for the opening session of University Conference, to hear from Elder Cook and President Reese byu.president in preparation for a new academic year.

President Reese shared a powerful message outlining six areas in which we can all cultivate the spiritual gift of being "quick to observe." He taught: "We must never subscribe to the false dichotomy that we can either be excellent or we can be faithful. No, we can and we will be excellent, not in spite of our loyalty to the gospel of Jesus Christ, but directly and precisely because of it."

Elder Cook discussed the doctrinal purposes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and taught: "Our purpose, in addition to knowledge and education, is preparing students for eternity. If we are going to the light of Christ to lay hold upon every good thing, these purposes of Christ's restored Church must not just be understood but exhibited in all of our lives [...]. Each of us must continuously strive for personal righteousness and temple worthiness."
