January is bath safety month!

We all love bath time with our little ones and although a lot of fun with toys and bubbles, bath time can actually be one of the most dangerous times of the day – the bath temperature for babies, the faucet, and even the water can all be dangerous.

As a Pediatrician and mother, I am here to ease your worries and make your bath space the safest it possibly can. So let’s go shopping and get everything you need.

🫧For younger babies make sure to grab a baby bathtub or bather like these two options from The First Years. Baby baths provide many extra layers of safety. There is less water, more security and less of a likelihood of slipping and falling. These tubs support your baby’s body and prevent sliding with a sloped textured surface or sling.

🫧A bath thermometer is a great way to check the temperature of the tub to prevent burns. A safe temperature for a baby’s bath is 98.6–100°F (37–38°C) or about 98.6°F (36°C) for a newborn.

🫧When it comes to bath toys, always avoid toys that have holes. These toys are known to grow mold rather quickly. Always choose toys that are easy to wash and have no holes that can capture water.

🫧Make sure to always put down a non slip mat to prevent slips and falls.

🫧Grab a drain cover to prevent injuries.

🫧Don’t forget a faucet cover to keep your little one’s head safe from bumps and bruises.

FACT: Did you know that younger children can drown in only an inch of water? Yep that’s right and a pretty scary statistic. Even when the tub is less than one-fourth full, your little one can still be in danger of drowning. This is a friendly reminder to please never leave your baby alone in the bath, even if it’s only for a few seconds!

Happy shopping and stay safe!
