"My first year of college coincided with my official diagnosis of chronic migraine. It was challenging to manage my health on top of school, and I desperately needed a community and an outlet beyond medication to deal with my pain.

I became curious about art therapy and decided to pursue it through the University Honors Program at the University of Cincinnati. As a member, I was required to complete a series of five honors experiences, so I decided to self-design one. Through my honors experience "The Art of Healing", I sought to make my invisible experiences visible, including my journey with chronic migraine, as well as improve my communication and connection with my community.

As part of my experience, I created three paintings, each telling a different story from my life. I shared one of these pieces with Miles for Migraine as part of their Dear Migraine book project. Miles for Migraine is a nonprofit supporting those with migraine, which played an integral role in my connecting with others during the project. I attended virtual education days and mindfulness sessions with various guest speakers ranging from doctors to yoga instructors. I loved the community that I had, even online, and how I could interact with people who understood me.

The painting I submitted for the book depicted a migraine as I imagine it would look if I could see it manifest. The book (Dear Migraine) showcases creative expressions of personal experiences living with migraine/headache disease. The goal of the book is to raise awareness of migraine in hopes that the social stigma surrounding the disease will decrease and funding for research and treatment will increase.

Miles for Migraine and its community played a huge part in my life as I completed this experience, and I'm thrilled that I could share my work through them. It was the perfect culmination to a project that taught me the value of community and sharing our experiences with others. Thank you to everyone who made it possible!" - Emily
