Following the construction of the shipping container wall around People’s Park, the park’s adjacent roads have been narrowed as part of the approved Traffic Control Plan, prompting many students and community organizations to raise concerns about safety for bikers and pedestrians.

Prior to closing the construction site, UC Berkeley spokesperson Kyle Gibson said campus worked collaboratively with the city of Berkeley to develop and regulate vehicular and pedestrian movement.

This plan included the configuration of an east-west bike lane on the corner of Bowditch Street and Dwight Way rerouting cyclists to Hillegass Avenue, Gibson explained. The plan also included a north-south bike lane along Bowditch Street.
