Throwback to Mexico this year! And some thoughts.

Suffering -> Endurance -> Character -> Hope
The Path to Hope, from Romans 5:3b-4

I never really appreciated the Path to Hope until recently, talking about it with my dad. I believe embracing this path is necessary to reach my best in any area.

1. Suffering
To feel/bear what is painful to the body or mind.
We work by the “sweat of our brow,” with all the thorns and thistles this fallen world brings. Failure is usually inevitable, and hope can seem so far away. But take heart, it ends at hope.
I think hard work is a type of suffering, especially at the beginning of the Path to Hope. But if I walk through it and embrace it, that suffering brings me to the next step, endurance.
2. Endurance
The ability to sustain effort amidst suffering.
From suffering, we develop endurance. I think it might be the only way. I need endurance to succeed at most things.
3. Character
The inner strength and integrity that consistent expressions of endurance will bring. It is not only the ability to endure but to thrive under suffering.
The more character I have, the bigger the challenge I can successfully, and consistently, face.
4. Hope
The deep assurance that something good will happen in the future.
That assurance to overcome future challenges comes from a foundation of character, which comes from endurance, which comes from suffering. Hope is grown, not faked.

Parts of my life and even parts within those parts can all be at simultaneously different stages of the Path to Hope. And I think this path is cyclical in some respects.

If I ever have any lack of hope, or hopelessness, I can take heart that there is a path to get there, albeit starting with suffering, but ending where I want to go.

Jesus rules.

*Romans 5:3b-4 But we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
