“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

There were very few voices at practice today other than our players. This was by design. Soccer is one of the most unusual sports in that we have no playbook to memorize, there are no timeouts where the coach scripts the winning shot, nor are there even common patterns of offense and defense. Nearly every moment is unique and it’s why it’s called the beautiful game. Soccer players must be prepared to read all those moments, react and make decisions all on their own. Nothing drives us more crazy when we watch youth team coaches screaming instructions for every single touch. Those players are very robotic, neurotic and usually can’t think for themselves because they are constantly being told what to do. 🙁

A large driving force within our team and culture comes from our experienced players…our Seniors aka our Tribe Leadership Council (TLC). We take our job of mentoring them and turning them into confident and capable leaders seriously, and it begins when they are Freshmen. 👊🏻 

Today we put them in charge of running small technical sessions for each of our four positional groups. We gave them no instruction or assistance and just watched. No surprise to us, they crushed it and looked like coaches in the making. Our job becomes pretty easy when the leadership within the team creates such an incredible culture 🤩
