In the 125 years of Werder Bremen, watching this guy play the beautiful game was special. When Diego Ribas landed on the banks of the Weser River, it kicked off three years of magic. A match made in heaven, the stars were aligning right before our eyes

We’re talking about a player destined to wear the no.10 shirt. The deft touches, flicks and free-kicks. All in the style of a man enjoying a warm evening on the Copacabana, as Mas Que Nada plays softly in the background. So good during his Santos days, Pelé said Diego had the talents to surpass O Rei himself.

And whilst the endorsements and eye test said one thing, his first season in a European league said another. Until he put on that famous Green and White. Then the stars aligned.

His first start? Just the one goal and two assists. His first month? The Bundesliga player-of-the-month trophy was already in the bag. We’ve all seen THAT goal against Aachen from inside his own half, and it still gets us out of our seats with every rewatch. One of Werder’s ‘Two Motors’ alongside Torsten Frings.
