26.2 miles. 6 minutes and 52 seconds per mile (or faster). Sub-three hours.

Running a sub-three-hour marathon is an incredible accomplishment. Thirty-one Black American-born women have achieved this feat, earning a spot on “The List” maintained by running historian Gary Corbitt @tedcorbitt_historymaker. Three of the 31 women on The List live and train in NYC. ⬇️

Introducing Rolanda, Erica, and Danni! Born in Queens and later a track and cross country athlete at the University of Tennessee, Rolanda, a @centralparktc runner, broke three hours in her very FIRST marathon attempt with a time of 2:49:36 at the 2018 Chicago Marathon. Erica, a sprinter at Georgetown University and @BlackRosesNYC runner, smashed through the 3:00 barrier with a 2:52:05 at the 2022 Berlin Marathon after having two children. A Brooklyn native and @BlackRosesNYC runner, Danni felt strongly inspired after seeing her teammate Erica break 3 hours. At the 2023 Chicago Marathon, Danni achieved her goal and ran 2:59:33.

“It’s bright and promising,” Danni said when thinking about the future of Black American women who will run sub-3:00, “and there are more of us coming.”

As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, let’s show some 💙 to Rolanda, Erica, and Danni as they continue to break barriers and pave the way for future Black American women runners who will follow in their footsteps. Read more about their journeys to sub-three on our blog at the link in bio. ✍️
