It was August of 1982, and I had just turned 20 in July. I was hanging out with a couple friends at my sisters apartment, and I had mentioned that I would like to go back to my home state of Wisconsin to see my 96 year old grandpa one more time. I kinda tossed around the idea of leaving in a couple days, when one of my friends said "why not just leave tonight?". I figured I had no reason to wait, so by 10 p.m. I was Wisconsin bound. 38 hours later, I pulled into Appleton and called a few cousins to let them know I was in town. My family in Shawano were dairy farmers, and they let me stay with them. Over the course of the next month, I saw my grandpa several times. When it was time to come back to California, I decided to go by way of Kentucky and stop by Spendthrift Farms to see my all time favorite horse, Seattle Slew. On September 18, I drove up to their office, went in, and was warmly greeted by a woman who knew me by name. Before I could ask how she knew me, she said I needed to call my dad. She took me into a private office so I could call home. My grandpa died earlier that morning, and my dad called Spendthrift to let them know I would be there and told them what happened. They arranged for me to have a private tour, given by a gentleman named Walt. To this day, he's one of the finest people I've ever met. He brought every horse out of their stall for me to photograph and even pet (if they were friendly enough). When we got to Slew, emotions overcame me, and tears started rolling down my face. I know the sky is blown out, and his ears aren't perfect, but on September 18, 1982 I got to stroke the neck of my all time favorite horse, Seattle Slew. @spendthriftfarm #triplecrownwinner #seattleslew #goat #thoroughbred #stud #ra
