Meet EMMA WEISKOPF for this #MajorMonday. Emma is a fourth-year Elementary Education student on track to obtain a Masters in Special Education through the ProTeach program.

🐊Why did you chose your major? I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the forth grade. My mom works in education and through this I was able to become influenced and inspired by many different factors. She inspired me through her back to school speeches, the way teachers looked up to her and respected her, the culture she created within the entire school, and the way she made every decision with teaching and learning at the forefront. I chose the special education track within the College of Education because of my friend who has down syndrome that I grow up alongside. Growing alongside him allowed me to see how teachers quite literally changed his life.

🐊What do you plan to do with it in the future? In the future I plan to go into special education and work on reading initiatives for students with severe disabilities. I also aspire to do work with equity within schools as well as the changing mental health of students entering schools today. My biggest dream would be to be the Secretary of Education, but I would settle for being a highly effective teacher that is known for loving well and changing lives too.

🐊What do you enjoy the most about working within your major at UF? The thing I enjoy most about working within the College of Education at UF is the community of like-minded individuals. Knowing that everyone has a similar passion allows for deep connections made within classes, chatting in the new Starbucks, or in passing under the iconic tree in the courtyard. These connections create a unique support system. Being in education is not easy. There is a need for a support system of people who understand. The College of Education community is just that. Everyone understands and is there to support and encourage everyone around them. This unique support system stems beyond students and advisors, it’s composed of every single person that works and learns within the College of Education.
