Diastasis Recti Myths👇🏼:
❌Your abs are torn/ripped open when you have DR
Your abs are not ripped open nor are you going to “re-rip” them open. Be careful with the language you use or hear others use. Our abs naturally have to separate to make room for a growing baby or will separate with excessive abdominal tissue when someone has a distended abdomen even without having children. BOTH of those scenarios slowly happen over time, not over night nor with an ab exercise you did one time.
❌Never do sit ups again
People can have a “functioning” diastasis where they might still have a 2 finger width but they have good force closure and the depth is firm. They can do a ton of core movements including sit ups and control pressure, they are STRONG in their core and breathing techniques and have no symptoms of coning, doming, pressure, back discomfort. There are some cases where the Diastasis is not healing and surgery is required.
❌Never do planks again
The above explanation for sit ups is the same for planks. We can STILL function with diastasis, it is just a matter of how we manage pressure and control. Yes there are times people aren’t ready for planks but don’t think that you will NEVER be able to do them again. And yes there are some cases that do require surgery, but don’t make blanket statements that just because you have or have had diastasis that you should never do planks again.
Sit ups and planks can be very functional for day to day movements like sitting up in bed or other exercise movements that require a plank position, like doing a push up
