Each fall in the southeastern plains of Colorado, tarantulas crawl up to a few miles in search of a mate. ❤️
Here at Butterfly Pavilion, we call it the great “mate-gration”. This long journey to find a mate, unfortunately, comes with many dangers. Hundreds of tarantulas are killed by cars as they attempt to cross the highways to find the female tarantulas hiding in their burrows. 
 
To explore ways to reduce tarantula casualties, Butterfly Pavilion’s research team is surveying for hotspots of tarantula activity and mortalities during the mating season along highways in southeastern Colorado.
