"I would recommend attending career fairs on campus to gain connections and practice the interview process. It was helpful to go to as many booths as possible to practice speaking about my portfolio, abilities, and experience," said Kimberly Cooper. "I also recommend creating a Look Book before the career fair so firms can reach out and schedule interviews."

Kimberly Cooper is a senior Interior Design major. In the future, she hopes to develop her design abilities further at a firm that supports and advocates for the local community.

This past summer, Cooper had an internship with HDR as an Interior Design Intern.

"I came across the internship opportunity at HDR through researching firms and curating a list of the top firms I wanted to work for. HDR reached out to me before the career fair due to my Look Book," said Cooper.

There, Cooper was given a wide range of responsibilities. From ordering materials, contacting product reps, and selecting finishes to collaborating on designs, attending client meetings, and producing construction documents.

"During this experience I enjoyed collaborating with the interior designers at HDR. They provided me the opportunity to design spaces and select finishes with their guidance, which has helped me refine my skills. I also enjoyed the wide variety of tasks I was delegated to. This helped expand my knowledge in the field while learning which aspects of interior design I enjoy the most," said Cooper.

Cooper was able to learn hands-on how professional interior design firms operate and the role that interior designers play in the larger design process.

Outside of her studies, Kimberly is a member of the Great Plains Chapter for the International Interior Design Association, and she is also a member of the Nebraska Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.
