Established in 1865, Penn State’s Berkey Creamery underwent several location and name changes, but its mission and goal remained to serve the university’s community and foster an education in food science.

According to Manager of Sales and Marketing James Brown, the creamery, which is only 10 years younger than the university, used to be called the State College Creamery.

“We were (initially) part of a barn with a hayloft and a blacksmith shop,” Brown said. “It was established just as far as doing dairy research. In 2006, we moved to where we’re currently at, which is the Rodney A. Erickson Food Science Building.”
