There is genuine excitement for El Salvador ahead of their W Gold Cup qualifier this Saturday vs Guatemala.

The team features Chicago Red Star midfielder Samantha Fisher, who just got her Salvadoran passport.

She’s the first NWSL player to be called up to La Selecta Femenina 🇸🇻

Fisher was born and raised in California to an American father and Salvadoran mother.

After receiving her passport, she went to El Salvador for the first time last month to join the training camp.

Her mother also went with her, and the two met with many family members there.

“I decided to play for El Salvador because a lot of my family is from there, a lot of them live there,” she spoke to Youtube channel Selecta Promesas in English.

“I decided it was time. El Salvador is doing great in soccer, so I want to be a part of it and help in any way that I can.”

Fisher doesn’t speak any Spanish or understand. But being an NWSL player for last two years, she brings a lot of quality and experience to El Salvador.

The team has never qualified to the CONCACAF W Championship, so let’s see if they can qualify for this inaugural W Gold Cup.

Fisher is among 12 Salvadoran-Americans in the squad. 

They will take on Guatemala in California, Fisher’s home state, and she’s hoping many of her family will come to watch.

Whoever wins will be in a group with Canada, Costa Rica, and Paraguay.
