For this week’s story of #HowWeMetAtRU, we have Mercy & Lindsay ✨

"Rutgers introduced me to Lindsay Minton, my partner in life and love, my best friend, and my eternal bandmate. In 2004, I started my Rutgers journey at Demarest Hall, the special interest dorm that provides a welcoming environment for the punks, the hippies, and anyone else who felt a little “different.” Lindsay started in Tinsley Hall, but she, too, was one of these different people. She soon found her way to Demarest and followed a group of folks to a party. I was in this group, and after the party, she sent me a message on AIM to see if I wanted to hang out. I absolutely did. Our first “date” was an Adrienne Rich poetry reading at Voorhees Chapel. On the way back to the dorms, I nervously went to hold her hand and felt immense, indescribable joy. Then, after talking about it for weeks, we finally kissed each other. 

Over the next four years, we grew up together. We started a band, went on adventures, fought, cried, and made up. By the time we graduated, we had both made each other so much better that we were able to make a big leap. We moved to Houston, with Lindsay joining Teach for America and me starting a Ph.D. in US History. In Houston, we started a band called football, etc. Because our Rutgers punk friends taught us how to be a band without a manager, we could quickly get the band off the ground and stick with it for the long haul. We released countless records and toured North America, Europe, and Japan. We even made it back to New Brunswick a few times. Sometimes the shows were great, sometimes pretty bad, but I always had a blast with Lindsay by my side."
