- I think Ella needs no introduction here, truly an icon. With 13 grammies, 40mil+ records, and the title “the first lady of song” her voice was ageless and was the most popular for over a half a century. Wes Montgomery is one of the most important Jazz guitarists in history, and dubbed the most influential. His use of octaves gave him such a distinct sound, one that is still strived to be created in todays music. Count Basie was another notable pianist, composer and big band leader who defined the swing era of big bands, working with the most famous blues singers, and jazz musicians. He was also the first black man to receive a Grammy in 1958.
