Netflix and F1 are partnering to create an original 10 episode docu-series covering the 2018 season that will air in 2019. This is part of Liberty Media Corporation’s recently announced global ad campaign to grow the F1 brand. ESPN has a strong stake in that growth even though they acquired the US broadcasting rights to 2018 races for virtually nothing (via @forbes ). They have a strong stake because of the potential for growth in the market. Live F1 viewership in the US grew 70% in the last five years. ESPN will try to rebound from some harsh criticism of their coverage of last weekend’s Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, the first event of the 2018 season.
