In Colorado, avalanche rescue dogs have been used since the mid-1890s. A large 1987 avalanche near Breckenridge that killed four skiers led to the inception of a program to train rescuers in-state to use to use dogs in avalanche situations—and the Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment (C-RAD) was born.
