RAIN LEADS TO FLOODING (AGAIN): Earlier today, water from last night’s heavy rain seeped into the MAC building through the exit door leading into the theater. According to assistant principal Gabe Reyes, the construction process in the adjacent parking lot most likely contributed to the flooding, since land next to the building has been raised, and the gutter from the side of the building has been removed to prepare for new construction.

Eventually, enough water permeated the building to fill the orchestra pit and a solid few inches of water across the floor, forcing classes held in the theater, like senior Mariela Denson’s technical theater I class, to migrate to the cafeteria for the remainder of the school day.

“We never went inside. Ms. V [tech theater teacher Kristin Vandenberg] sent us a message about thirty minutes before telling us to go straight to the cafeteria for class,” Denson said.

Tech theater I classes are currently in their carpentry unit, which requires the MAC’s woodshop. Plans to work in the carpentry space today were abandoned since the rainwater had invaded the space.

“It didn’t mess it [the lesson plan] up entirely, but we’ll be a bit behind when we get back in the theater,” Denson said.

A Stanley Steamer truck arrived at McCallum this afternoon to drain the water and work to restore the theater to a usable condition. It is unclear at this time what will be done to prevent similar flooding and leaks from occurring in the future as construction around the MAC continues.
