The Knights’ Thanksgiving break trip to Lockhart was a lot like the plot of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The Knights put together a stellar first half that culminated with a 22-point second quarter and a 12-point halftime lead. The exemplary first half was all the more impressive because the team executed it playing an offense scheme they had learned only the day before.

The team had every reason to come out for the second half confident, but the game took an unexpected turn in favor of the home team in the second half.

“When we came back from halftime, we felt too comfortable,” junior center Sam Cowles said.

Coach Carly Kehn agreed and credited the Lions for the adjustments they made at halftime.

“We knew they had some aggressive and talented players, so we weren't surprised that they started playing with more energy, but we just didn't match it,” head coach Carly Kehn said. “I feel like we gave into the pressure instead of resisting it.”

Kehn added that Lockhart has always been a tough out for the Knights but that she wasn’t sure if that played a role in the team’s second-half woes. Regardless of the reason, Kehn said the Lions just willed the game their way.

“Lockhart just wanted it more,” Kehn said. “They were hustling after every loose ball, crashing hard for every layup and executing their game plan. They decided they were not going to lose the game, and unfortunately for us, they didn't.”

Cowles described the second half in similar terms.

“They were able to catch up and get ahead by the fourth quarter. After that, we had almost given up because we didn’t expect to win.”

Kehn said the tough loss provides a blueprint of what the Knights need to work on to get to the level they aspire to reach.

“Instead of playing to win, we were playing not to lose,” she said. “That's something I have to sit with and find a way to change. whether it be changing what we do for halftime or running more toughness drills, which we started yesterday, it’s up to me. I've heard this from my coach when I was in high school: ‘Players win games, coaches lose them.’ At the end of the day, if our toughness isn’t there, that’s on me.”
