MAC BAND CELEBRATES 70 YEARS, NELSON'S LEGACY: The @macbandboosters held a gala on Friday night at the UT Alumni Center to celebrate the 70th year of the Mac Band and to pay tribute to Ms. Carol Nelson for her 43 years directing the band.

As the Connally Ballroom filled up with both past and present faces of the McCallum band community, the love and appreciation for Ms. Nelson was palpable. From a slideshow with photos of Ms. Nelson's time at McCallum, to two bulletin boards covered in newspaper clippings of her accomplishments at Seguin High School and at the University of Texas, Carol Nelson's musical expertise spreads far and wide.

Many familiar faces were present at the event, including recent graduates John Hamlet Jr. and Bobby Currie who came back to act as the event's emcees and to share how their band experience has affected their lives.

After performances from the Knights of Steel and the Jazz Band and as guests finished up their dinners, the president of the Band Boosters, Christian Kurtz, took stage to give thanks to Ms. Nelson and announce the creation of the Carol A. Nelson Scholarship Fund.

"Ms. Nelson has been band director at McCallum High School for 43 years,” Kurtz said. “In those 43 years, she has taken the marching band to UIL State Marching Competition in 1980, 2005, 2017, 2019 and of course, 2021. There is no better namesake to inspire the scholarship recipient to a life of music and service than Ms. Nelson, and we are eternally grateful for her influence on our kid's lives and our own. We love you."

The fund, which received its first funds from the proceeds of the live auction and raffle, is meant to support any graduating seniors from McCallum who are in band if they choose to continue a musical career in college.

After Kurtz's speech, current senior Stephanie Gallegos took to the lectern to share a brief history of some of the many awards and accomplishments of Ms. Nelson. If she were to have listed every accomplishment, the event would have extended into Saturday, a point Gallegos made clear in the opening of her speech.
