PROGRESS REPORT: By any measure, the freshman boys basketball team is having a terrific season. Heading into their road rematch with LBJ on Tuesday night, the Knights were 5-1 in district, having beaten every district opponent except these same Jaguars.

Most of the Knight victories in district and out have been lopsided wins. The one exception in district play was a 63-39 home loss to LBJ on Dec. 6. The Jags are always a tough opponent on the basketball court, and the 2022-2023 freshman unit is particularly tough.

In the first game between the two teams, the Knights were not prepared for the frenetic pace and full-court pressure that the Jags typically throw at their opponents. In that first game in December, the Knights trailed by 17 after one quarter.

The Knights knew all of this heading into Tuesday’s rematch at LBJ, and they hoped to show everyone, themselves most of all, that they had progressed as a team since the first meeting with LBJ.

Starting center Darby Roldan said the team accomplished that goal.

“We were much more prepared to play their style, and we were able to perform under pressure better than last game,” he said. “We matched their intensity as well as we could, and we kept within a closer range than last game.”

In the rematch, the Knights hung with the Jags throughout the first half, staying within a good run of tying the game. Roldan singled out teammate Nash Wegner as best exemplifying the team’s better showing against the best team in the district.

“He hustled the most out of all of us, getting lots of rebounds and steals and blocks,” Roldan said. “He had a really good defensive game.”

In the second half, however, the Jags put the game away.

“I think we made improvements, but at the end of the day they were the better team,” Roldan said.

The Knights turned things around fairly quickly in their next game, which was Friday night at home against the Navarro Vikings. After a slow start in the first quarter, the Knights kicked in the afterburners in the second quarter and beyond to win easily, 68-16, to improve to 6-2 in district play. We'll have a report and gallery about that game on this feed soon.
