EXPECTED EXECUTION: Three pitchers combined to throw a run rule-shortened no hitter as the varsity baseball team pummeled the LBJ Jaguars 16-0 Wednesday night at Nelson Field to win their third straight district game against no losses.

Junior Sam Stevens took to the mound as McCallum's starting pitcher. Stevens threw two perfect innings striking out five of the six batters he faced. Not to be outdone, junior John Dietz pitched a perfect third and fourth inning, also striking out five of the six batters he faced. Closer Nico Sanchez pitched a perfect fifth, striking out the side.

Only one Jag reached base over the five-inning game, and he reached on a passed ball after striking out and was subsequently picked off first base. Jag hitters put the ball in play twice: one popped out and the other grounded out.

The Knights meanwhile scored runs in bunches with some timely hitting and some generosity from bases on balls courtesy of the Jag hurlers.

Sanchez led off the game with a walk and scored the game’s first run after a Stevens double. After Pablo Lopez reached base, Dietz doubled to plate Stevens and Lopez to make it 3-0. A Charlie Cox single drove home Dietz to make it 4-0.

In the second, the Knights again put up a crooked number on a combination of walks and timely hitting. Dietz singled to drive home Max Satterwhite, and Pablo Lopez stroked a two-run single to bring home Conrad Bohls and Sanchez to make the score 12-0.

Dietz was 2-for-5 in the game with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Cox and Sanchez each scored twice.

Satterwhite said he anticipated the outcome of the game.

“We were expecting to run rule them, which we did,” Satterwhite said.

Satterwhite said the comfortable win did not prepare them for more challenging opponents.

“Games like this will not prepare us for tough competition when playoffs come around,” Satterwhite said.

While they won convincingly, Satterwhite believes there are things that the team could work on.

“I think we just need to tighten up our defense a bit,” Satterwhite said, “as well as improve our approach at the plate to reduce leaving runners stranded on base,.”
