The varsity softball team beat the Navarro Vikings 16-4 last Tuesday night to give second-year softball coach Rachel Whatley her 300th career win.

According to junior and co-captain Sadie Roselle, the Knights quickly picked up their pace despite a slow start.

“It took us a while to get used to the pitches, which were slow and would drop into the strike zone,” Roselle said. “Once we got the timing down our hitting was able to improve.”

The key to adjusting to the off-speed pitches was patience.

“We are used to practicing with faster pitches,” Roselle said. “It took a lot of restraint to not reach forward for the ball, which would take away the power of the swing causing us to miss completely.”

Tuesday’s game reminded Roselle and her teammates about the importance of making adjustments while batting.

“As hitters, we need to work on our timing, both for fast and slow pitchers,” Roselle said. “The speed of pitchers throughout the district varies significantly so it is important to be prepared for anything at the plate.”

Roselle said that in addition to making adjustments well at the plate, the Knights also worked well as a team.

“We did a great job communicating throughout the game and in the dugout,” Roselle said. “When we are staying loud and saying the plays we make fewer mistakes and don't get in our heads.”

Roselle delivered a key base hit in the game.

“I started off slow and was definitely in my head,” Roselle said. “Luckily my teammates noticed this and gave me a great pep talk. I ended up hitting a three-run home run in my third at-bat, and for the rest of the game kept my head up and played really well.”

Softball plays Eastside tonight at Noack with JV at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
