RANGERS 5, JV1 KNIGHTS 2: With a first pitch delivered promptly at 4:35 p.m. on April 14 at the McCallum baseball field, there was a larger crowd than usual due to the stream of students looking for entertainment after school on a Friday afternoon.

The Knights' opponent, the Vista Ridge Rangers, a tough, 6A non-district foe, scored a run in the top of the first, and the Knights were unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning.

After two scoreless innings, the Rangers tallied two runs in the fourth off of sophomore Miles Chilton. After the Knights ended the top of the fourth without any more damage, both teams were shut out over the next four half-innings.

The Knights rose as the sun set. In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights loaded the bases for sophomore Garrison Camp, who singled to bring home the Knights' first run of the game.

Later, CJ Willie doubled to score junior Sage Allison, who sprinted from third base to home before the ball even touched ground. Willie’s trek to second was aided by some sloppy fielding by the Ranger left fielder.

"Their defense just kept making errors, and we took those opportunities to get two runs across," Willie said.

The Rangers escaped the sixth with a one-run lead at 3-2. In the top of the seventh, the Rangers scored two insurance runs, and in the bottom of the seventh, the Rangers retired the side to leave McCallum’s campus with the win.

Despite the loss, Willie said the game was worth it.

"It was a lot of fun,” Willie said. “We didn't hit very much, but varsity was in the stands cheering us on the entire time, which got us pumped and got us through the game."

The next day, the JV Knights atoned for the loss by beating the Navarro Vikings on their home turf, 16-1. A week later, the Knights defeated Crockett, 13-4, at home but lost two days later to Akins 7-2 in a non-district game at Nelson Field.
